Natural Rubber – Types, Grades & Applications

What is Natural Rubber?

Natural rubber (NR) is a high-performance elastomer derived from the latex of the Hevea brasiliensis tree, a tropical species native to the Amazon basin. Chemically, it is composed predominantly of cis-1,4-polyisoprene, a long-chain polymer whose highly regular molecular structure endows it with exceptional elastic properties. The latex is produced in specialised cells (laticifers) in the inner bark and is harvested through a process called tapping — a controlled incision into the bark that allows the latex to flow and be collected in cups.

Natural rubber exhibits a unique combination of properties that synthetic alternatives have not been able to fully replicate: outstanding tensile strength (up to 30 MPa in vulcanised form), very high elongation at break (500–800%), excellent resilience and low heat build-up, superior tear and abrasion resistance, good adhesion to metals and fabrics, and favourable dynamic mechanical performance under repeated stress cycles. These characteristics make it irreplaceable in applications demanding both strength and flexibility — most critically in aircraft and heavy truck tyres.

Raw latex contains roughly 30–40% rubber hydrocarbon, along with proteins, lipids, inorganic salts, and water. Once harvested, the latex undergoes processing — coagulation, sheeting or creping, drying, and grading — to produce the various solid and liquid rubber grades used in industry. Vulcanisation with sulphur cross-links the polymer chains, dramatically improving strength, elasticity, and resistance to heat and chemicals.

Manufacturing & Processing of Natural Rubber

The journey from tree to finished rubber grade involves several key production stages:

  1. Tapping: Skilled tappers make a precise diagonal cut into the bark every alternate day, allowing latex to flow into collection cups. A mature tree yields latex for 25–30 years.

  2. Collection & Preservation: Fresh latex is bulked and treated with ammonia or formic acid to prevent premature coagulation during transport to the factory.

  3. Coagulation: Diluted latex is treated with formic or acetic acid in coagulation tanks, forming a soft rubber slab or curd.

  4. Sheeting / Milling: The coagulum is passed through ribbed rollers to form Ribbed Smoked Sheets (RSS), or through crepe mills for crepe rubber. For Technically Specified Rubber (TSR/ISNR), the coagulum is shredded, dried in hot-air tunnels, and baled.

  5. Smoking & Drying: RSS sheets are hung in smokehouse chambers for several days; phenolic compounds in smoke provide preservation and the characteristic amber colour. ISNR/SVR grades are dried mechanically in tunnel dryers.

  6. Grading & Baling: Finished rubber is visually inspected (for RSS) or tested against technical specifications (for ISNR/SVR) covering dirt content, volatile matter, ash, nitrogen, and plasticity, before being baled at 33.3 kg for export.

  7. Latex Concentration: Field latex is centrifuged to remove serum water, producing Concentrated Latex (60% DRC) for direct industrial use in dipped goods and foam.

India as a Natural Rubber Producing Nation

India is among the world's top five natural rubber producers and holds a unique position in the global rubber landscape. Unlike the large-scale plantation economies of Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, India's rubber cultivation is dominated by smallholders — approximately 1.2 million farming families — concentrated primarily in Kerala, which accounts for over 75% of the country's total rubber area. Growing cultivation zones also exist in the North-Eastern states (Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya) and Tamil Nadu.

India's rubber productivity per hectare is among the highest in the world — a result of the Rubber Board of India's sustained investment in high-yielding clone development (RRII 105, RRII 430, GT 1, PB 260), best agronomic practices, and extension services to smallholders. The Rubber Board, established under the Rubber Act 1947 and headquartered in Kottayam, Kerala, regulates the rubber industry, promotes research, and certifies quality standards.

India is simultaneously one of the world's largest consumers of natural rubber, driven by its vast domestic tyre industry — home to MRF, Apollo, CEAT, JK Tyre, Birla, and others — as well as non-tyre sectors including automotive components, medical devices, footwear, and industrial goods. India produces ISNR grades conforming to international TSR standards and is a recognised exporter of both RSS and ISNR grades globally.

Natural Rubber Grades – Types & Applications

Ribbed Smoked Sheet (RSS) Grades

RSS is the traditional, visually inspected grade of natural rubber. Field latex is coagulated, rolled into ribbed sheets, and smoked in curing houses. Grades are defined by the International Quality of Natural Rubber Grades (Green Book) and classified by visual inspection.

RSS 1 – Premium Grade

RSS 1 is the highest quality ribbed smoked sheet — virtually free from all defects, with uniform amber colour, excellent transparency, and no visible bark, sand, or extraneous matter. The rubber must be dry, firm, and free from mould, tackiness, blisters, and oxidised streaks.

Applications: High-performance tyres (passenger car, aircraft, racing), precision-moulded industrial components, surgical gloves and medical devices, vibration dampers, high-grade adhesives, premium conveyor belts.

RSS 2 – Very Good Quality

RSS 2 permits slightly more visual defects than RSS 1 — minor blemishes, slight colour variations, and marginal oxidised streaks are tolerated. Quality remains consistently high.

Applications: Truck and bus radial tyres, automotive seals and gaskets, industrial hoses, footwear soles, general mechanical rubber goods, and engineered anti-vibration mounts.

RSS 3 – Benchmark Commercial Grade

RSS 3 is the most widely traded grade globally and the benchmark for commodity rubber markets (MCX, TOCOM). It allows moderate defects, slight tackiness, minor rust, and small amounts of foreign matter.

Applications: Commercial tyres (truck, bus, off-road), rubber bands, standard industrial rubber products, general-purpose hoses, footwear, and carpet backing.

RSS 4 – Average Commercial Grade

RSS 4 permits more significant visual defects, bark inclusions, mould patches, and non-uniform colouration, still useful where appearance is secondary.

Applications: Agricultural tyres, retreading compounds, industrial belts and mats, general footwear, and coarse rubber goods.

RSS 5 – Lower Commercial Grade

RSS 5 is the lowest RSS grade, permitting heavy bark, significant mould, excessive oxidisation, and general inconsistency. Priced at a significant discount to RSS 3.

Applications: Low-grade rubber products, construction materials, non-critical seals, adhesives for construction, and blending with reclaimed rubber.

Indian Standard Natural Rubber (ISNR) Grades

ISNR grades are India's technically specified rubber (TSR) grades, equivalent to Malaysian SMR or Thai STR. Defined by measurable technical parameters — dirt content, volatile matter, ash, nitrogen, Wallace Plasticity (Po), and Plasticity Retention Index (PRI) — rather than visual assessment. Produced from field coagulum shredded, dried, and baled. Conforming to IS 7638:2002.

ISNR 3L – Premium Technically Specified Grade

Maximum dirt 0.03%, volatile matter 0.8%, ash 0.6%, PRI minimum 60. Produced from fresh latex or very clean field coagulum. Pale colour, low impurity levels.

Applications: Passenger car tyres, precision engineering components, pharmaceutical closures, medical rubber goods, light-coloured products, and latex foam.

ISNR 5 – High Quality TSR

Maximum dirt 0.05%. Produced from clean field coagulum with careful processing. Technically consistent and widely accepted by tyre manufacturers.

Applications: Radial truck and bus tyres, automotive components, high-performance conveyor belts, industrial hoses, and engineered rubber parts.

ISNR 10 – Standard Commercial Grade

Maximum dirt 0.10%. Produced from mixed field coagulum including cup lump and slab. Versatile workhorse grade for many industrial applications.

Applications: Truck tyres, off-highway tyres, rubber mats and flooring, standard conveyor belts, extruded profiles, rubber-to-metal bonded components, and automotive weatherstripping.

ISNR 20 – Standard Industrial Grade

Maximum dirt 0.20%. Produced from a wider range of coagulum sources. The most commercially available ISNR grade, offering strong cost-quality balance.

Applications: Agricultural and industrial tyres, retreading, rubber-modified bitumen, standard hoses, footwear, waterproofing membranes, and general moulded goods.

Vietnamese SVR Grades

SVR 3L – Premium Vietnamese Grade

SVR 3L is produced from fresh latex with maximum dirt content of 0.03% and excellent plasticity retention — comparable to ISNR 3L. Vietnam's premium TSR grade for technically demanding applications.

Applications: Passenger car and premium truck tyres, latex foam, pharmaceutical and medical rubber goods, adhesives, sports goods, and precision-engineered components.

SVR CV60 – Constant Viscosity Grade

SVR CV60 has its molecular weight chemically stabilised using hydroxylamine sulphate during processing to deliver a consistent Mooney Viscosity of 60 ± 5 ML(1+4)@100°C. This eliminates the need for peptisation before compounding, saving processing time and energy. CV grades are also produced in India (ISNR CV).

Applications: Radial tyres for passenger cars and trucks (requiring uniform compound viscosity), automotive seals, precision moulded components, high-quality technical rubber goods, and applications where minimum storage hardening is critical.

Concentrated Natural Rubber Latex (60% DRC)

Concentrated latex is produced by centrifugation of field latex, raising dry rubber content (DRC) from 35% to approximately 60%. Available as High Ammonia (HA) Latex (0.6–0.7% ammonia) for longer shelf life, or Low Ammonia (LA) Latex stabilised with a secondary biocide for ammonia-sensitive applications. Traded in liquid form in ISO tank containers or drums.

Applications: Examination and surgical gloves (the single largest use globally), condoms, latex foam mattresses and pillows, elastic thread, carpet backing, dipped goods (balloons, catheters, finger cots), coatings, adhesives, and rubber-coated fabrics.

Skim Rubber

Skim rubber is a by-product of latex concentration. When field latex is centrifuged, the lighter serum fraction (skim) retains 3–8% rubber content. This is coagulated and processed into skim rubber sheets or bales. It contains higher proteins, resins, and non-rubber constituents, giving it distinct processing characteristics.

Properties: Lower purity, higher nitrogen, slightly reduced green strength. Often blended with primary grades. Priced at a discount to RSS/ISNR, making it attractive for cost-sensitive volume applications.

Applications: Rubber bands, footwear soles and components, adhesives, carpet backing, sponge rubber, low-grade moulded products, reclaim rubber processing, and blending in industrial compound formulations to reduce cost.
